the way from Hungary came this promo cd, which I received this
weekend. That made me curious, because Hungary also brought us
interesting acts like Scivias and Actus. I had not heard of
Cawatana before, but on a flyer that came with the cd I saw that
they have already played on a festival together with Scivias and
In Gowan Ring.
This cd contains 4 songs, lasting 12 minutes in total. I must
say, I really like the music of Cawatana! The music is rather
tranquil, with a romantic atmosphere. It combines classical with
folky elements, with some wave influences. Acoustic guitars,
atmospheric synths and both male and female voices are on the
tasteful menu. Especially the female vocals are outstanding,
sounding lovely and heavenly (they remind me a little of All
about Eve).
The first track 'God gave it, you take it' is a nice intro, with
piano and spoken male vocals. Then follows 'Irrahme', a romantic
song with some guitars and a nice duet of male and female vocals.
The most outstanding piece is 'White', rather short but very
nice. It contains more percussion than the other tracks and it is
quite dynamic, with an alternation of soft parts and a more
energetic refrain. The final song is called 'Real, Open', also
quite good, especially the guitars and the female vocals.

Later this year, in the summer or autumn, Cawatana hopes to
release its first album. I hope the quality of this promo cd is a
good taster for that album... "
"Cawatana is a Hungarian neofolk formation whose music is similar to some German formations such as Aurum Nostrum or Sonne Hagal. The compositions are based around the acoustic guitar and keyboards, rhythmed by discrete percussions. The male and female vocals succeed and superpose each other, delicate and fragile, subtle and ethereal, a velvet caress of deep melancholia. From Hungary, we already know Actus and Scivias, and Cawatana can pleasantly be situated halfway between these two formations. This 4 track CD was recorded more than a year ago and an album will soon be released. This group should soon make a name for itself as the quality of their music is undeniable and their compositions are very convincing. They would largely deserve to be on a label such as Eis & Licht. "Cawatana est une formation hongroise évoluant dans une veine néofolk, proche de certaines formations allemandes comme Aurum Nostrum ou Sonne Hagal. Les compositions se basent sur la guitare acoustique et les claviers, rythmées par de discretes percussions. Les voix masculines et féminines se succedent et se superposent, douces et fragiles, subtiles et aériennes, caresse de velours a la mélancolie profonde. De la Hongrie, on connaissait déja Actus et Scivias, et Cawatana peut agréablement se situer a mi-chemin de ces deux formations. Ce CD 4 titres a été enregistré il y a plus d'un an et un album devrait sortir prochainement. Ce groupe devrait rapidement faire parler de lui, tant sa qualité musicale est indéniable, et ses compositions tres convaincantes. "Was immer ich auch den letzten Monaten gedacht haben mag, Neofolk ist nicht zwangsläufig ein langweiliges oder gar ein totes Genre. Nicht solange es noch interessante Bands aus den interessenten Ecken dieser Welt gibt, für die man vielleicht auch bei Gelegenheit eine interessante Bezeichnung als Neofolk finden könnte (schon Bob Dylan war Folk, sollte uns das nicht zu denken geben?). Zu diesen ineressanten Bands zählt, man mag es bei dieser Einleitung kaum glaube, Cawatana aus dem schönen Ungarn. Eine Promo-CD mit vier sehr unterschiedlichen Tracks ist mir vor einigen Wochen ins Haus geflogen. Das erste Stück, ein Intro namens "God gave it, you take it" wird von sehr ruhigen, düsteren Soundscapes eingeleitet, über das sich allmählich eine männliche Stimme erhebt. Ein Klavier kommt dazu (vereinzeltes Klavierklimper habe ich schon bei Talk Talk geliebt, deren Platten ja wohl jeder sein eigen nennt) und plötzlich setzt die Musik richtig ein, fast wie in Zeitlupe und wir befinden uns schon im zweiten Track, "Irrahme (the revolution)", von insgesamt vieren. Im dritten Stück, "White", wird es dann schon etwas poppiger, oder auch dark-waviger, aber damit keineswegs schlechter. Da natürlich jede Rezension nicht den eigenen Eindruck ersetzen kann, möchte ich dem aufmerksamen Zeilenwanderer die Homepage der Band ans Herz legen, auf der man sich die komplette Promo als mp3-files herunter laden kann. Hört es euch an und freut euch, wie ich auch, auf eine komplette CD, wenn es denn dazu kommen sollte."

The voices, male and female are all pleasant, the compositions are generally built around a dry and melodious guitar and the whole oscillates between romantic gothic and folk-pop. Error of youth or lack of space to express themselves, it is not very important because I'm sure that we can expect a lot from this band."
"Premiere démo parvenue a nos oreilles de cette formation hongroise et un vaste savoir faire en perspective, trop vaste peutetre, ces quatre titres, indépendamment tres intéressants manquant quelque peu d'homogénéité. Les voix, féminine et masculine sont toutes aussi agréables, les compositions, essentiellement portées par une guitare seches, mélodieuses et le tout oscille entre gothique romantique et pop-folk. Défaut de jeunesse ou manque de place pour s'experimer, cela n'est pas grave car je suis sur que nous pouvons attendre beaucoup de ce groupe."
